CHILDHOOD IS A LUXURY

Donagh Colemanin dokumentti kertoo Changthangin ylängöllä Himalajalla elävien paimentolaisten arjesta ankaran työnteon parissa. He paimentavat lampaita ja vuohia ja tuottavat pashminavillaa kashmirhuivien raaka-aineeksi. Lasten koulunkäynti on vanhemmille erityisen tärkeää, koska he toivovat lapsilleen parempaa elämää. Vanhemmat ovat luku- ja kirjoitustaidottomia, mikä on esteenä elämänmuodon vaihtamiselle ja Lehin kaupunkiin muuttamiselle. 14-vuotias Padma-poika viihtyy kotona ja karkailee vanhempien kalliisti maksamasta koulusta. Karkailun vuoksi isoäiti uhkaa laittaa pojan kolmeksi vuodeksi armeijaan.

Ohjaaja Donagh Colemanilla (s. 1975) on niin Suomen, Irlannin kuin Yhdysvaltojenkin kansalaisuus. Lapsuus- ja nuoruusvuotensa hän vietti näissä kolmessa maassa. Coleman on opiskellut tiibetiläistä buddhalaisuutta sekä tiibetin kieltä. Hän on suorittanut musiikki- ja mediateknologian maisteri-koulutuksen Dublinin Trinity Collegessa. Lopputyö Echoes of valmistui vuonna 2002. Elokuva- ja videotyön ohella Coleman on ollut televisiojuontajana Ylellä, toiminut kuvittajana sekä julkaissut kirjan irlantilaisesta huumorista.

This documentary by Donald Coleman portrays the nomads in the Changthang highlands, Himalaya, and their every day life of hard work. They herd sheep and goats, and produce Pashmina wool for Kashmir scarves. It is especially important for the parents that their children go to school because they wish for better lives for their children. The parents cannot read or write, and that is an obstacle for a change of lifestyle and moving to the city of Leh. The 14-year-old boy called Padma likes to stay at home, and he frequently escapes from the school his parents are paying a lot of money for. Because he runs away from school, Padma's grandmother threatens to put him into the army for three years.

Director Donagh Coleman (b. 1975) has Finnish, Irish and US citizenship. He has spent his childhood and youth in these three countries. Coleman has studied Tibetian Buddhism and Tibetan language. He completed the music and media technology master's degree training in Trinity College in Dublin. His diploma work was Echoes of in 2002. Besides working in film and video, Coleman has been a TV presenter for the Finnish Broadcasting Company, and worked as an illustrator, and he has also published a book about Irish humour.
