16-vuotias Mbambu asuu Kilemben kylässä kauniiden Rwenzori-vuorten juurella Ugandassa. Mbambun pyrkimyksenä on saada yläkoulu päätökseen, ja rahan ansaitsemiseksi koulua varten hän aikoo ryhtyä myös turistioppaaksi Rwenzori-vuoria kierteleville vaellusreiteille. Mbambu on myös paikallisen teatteriryhmän jäsen. Teatteriesitykset ottavat omalla mukaansa tempaavalla tyylillään kantaa yhteisöä koskettaviin aiheisiin, kuten luonnon tuhoamiseen ja salametsästykseen. Dokumentissa kuvataan lämpimällä otteella Mbambua ja häntä ympäröiviä ihmisiä ja luontoa, kyläläisten elintapoja, uskomuksia, huumorintajua ja omintakeista tarinankerrontaperinnettä.
Lucian (s. 1976) ja Natasha (s. 1977) Muntean ovat molemmat valmistuneet Bukarestin yliopistoista. Serbipariskunnan aiempia töitä ovat mm. Punainen jääkaappi (2007) sekä Isosisko Punam (2009), jotka molemmat on esitetty Oulun festivaalilla. He ovat dokumenteissaan kiinnittäneet erityishuomiota lasten oikeuksiin ja lapsityövoiman hyväksikäyttöön. |
Mbambu, a 16-year-old girl, lives at the foot of the breathtaking Rwenzori Mountains in a village called Kilembe in Uganda. Her ambition is to finish secondary school and in order to get money for her education, she also aspires to become a mountain guide for the trekking routes of Rwenzori. Mbambu is also an active member of a local theatre group. The group’s action-filled performances comment on issues concerning the community, like the destruction of the environment and poaching. The documentary depicts warmly Mbambu, the people and the nature surrounding her, the customs and the beliefs of the villagers, not to forget their great sense of humour and their original story-telling culture.
Lucian Muntean (b. 1976) graduated from the University of Film and Theatre in Bucharest, Romania, in 2000. Natasha Muntean (b. 1977) graduated from the University of Arts in Bucharest in 2001. The Serbian couple have previously directed, among others, the documentary films Journey of a Red Fridge (2007) and Big Sister Punam (2009), both of which were screened at the Oulu Festival. They have paid special attention to children’s rights and child labour. |
