CHILDHOOD IS A LUXURY

Pachamama eli Äiti Maa oli inkojen mytologiassa lohikäärmettä muistuttava luonnon ja hedelmällisyyden jumalatar. Vielä nykyään Bolivian suolatasangoilla työskentelevät inkojen jälkeläiset uskovat Äiti Maan auttaviin voimiin. Suolakentillä rehkivät sekä aikuiset että lapset. Vaikka kuorma-autot ovat tulleet perinteisten laamakaravaanien tilalle, osa suolasta kuljetetaan yhä laamoilla vaikeakulkuisille vuoristoseuduille. Elokuva kertoo perheestä, joka edelleen kuljettaa suolaa laamojen avulla vuorille. Tarina kerrotaan perheen pojan Kunturin näkökulmasta. Matka vuorille voi kestää kolmekin kuukautta, ja sen aikana on monia hankalia tilanteita, joihin apua pyydetään Äiti Maalta.

Ohjaaja Toshifumi Matsushita syntyi vuonna 1950 Japanissa. Valmistuttuaan Doshishan yliopistosta hän työskenteli apulaisohjaajana Shouchiku Kyoto -elokuvayhtiössä. Elokuvantekoa Matsushita on opiskellut New Yorkin yliopistossa. Hän on myös toiminut tuottajana ja perusti vuonna 1987 Dolphin Productionsin dokumenttien ja tv-ohjelmien tuotantoa varten.

Pachamama, Mother Earth, was the dragon-like Inca goddess of nature and fertility. Even today the descendants of the Incas, who work on the salt plains in Bolivia, believe in the helping powers of Mother Earth. Both adults and children work on the salt plains. Although trucks have replaced the traditional llama caravans, a portion of the salt is still even today carried by llamas to the mountain areas which are difficult to get to. The film is about a family who transfers salt to the mountains with the help of llamas. The story is relayed from the son Kuntur's point of view. The journey to the mountains can take up to three months, and during that they come across many tricky situations that need the help of Mother Earth.

Director Toshifumi Matsushita was born in 1950 in Japan. After graduating from Doshisha University he worked as an assisting director in Shouchiku Kyoto Film Studio. Matsushita has studied film making in the University of New York. He has also worked as a producer, and in 1987 he founded the Dolphin Productions for documentary and TV production.
