Elokuva kertoo koulukodissa asuvista nuorista ja heidän opettajistaan. Oppilaat ja opettajat ottavat usein yhteen ja käyvät sanasotaa keskenään. Kouluun tulee uusi, nuori ohjaaja Ari, joka saa heti alussa huomata oppilaiden oleva kurittomia. Kurittomuus ei kuitenkaan ole ainoa ongelma, vaan koulukodin seinät kätkevät sisäänsä myös vakavamman asian.

Koulukodin kasvatti Nitta on ollut yöllä karkumatkalla kaupungilla ja löytää palatessaan koulukodin johtajan tyttären Annaleenan, jonka kimppuun on käyty. Joku henkilökunnasta raiskaa koulukodin tyttöjä, mutta tytöt vaikenevat, koska kukaan ei kuitenkaan uskoisi heitä. Pikku hiljaa totuus alkaa kuitenkin paljastua Arille. Hän tekee itsekin jotain kiellettyä rakastuessaan lähes täysi-ikäiseen oppilaaseen Nittaan.

Kissan kuolema perustuu Taru Väyrysen romaaniin ja se on Raimo O. Niemen ensimmäinen elokuvateatterilevitykseen tehty elokuva. Kirjan pohjana ovat olleet Väyrysen omat kokemukset hänen työskennellessään Hämeenlinnan Vanajan koulukodissa.

The film is about teenagers and their teachers at a reform school. The students and the teachers often fight together, both physically and verbally. Then a new young instructor Ari arrives at the school and notices right from the beginning that the students lack discipline. However, that is not the only problem, as the walls of the school hide a more serious issue.

Nitta, one of the reform school pupils, is returning from a nightly escape to the city when she bumps into the principal's daughter Annaleena. The girl has been assaulted. Somebody from the staff is sexually abusing the girls at the reform school. Still, the girls say nothing about it thinking nobody would believe them anyway. Little by little the truth dawns on Ari. Even he himself is not that innocent as he falls in love with the almost-adult Nitta.

Killing of a cat is based on a novel by Taru Väyrynen, and it is Raimo O. Niemi's first theatrically released film. Väyrynen's own experiences in her work at the Vanaja reform school in Hämeenlinna are the inspiration for the novel.
