ENKELIMYSTEERIO | Through a glass, darkly

Tänä vuonna Cecilie ei jaksa osallistua perheen jouluvalmisteluihin, sillä hän on vakavasti sairas. Cecilie viettää loputtomasti aikaa vuoteenomana, ja ajatuksissaan hän matkustaa yhä uudelleen takaisin edelliseen kesään. Silloin hän oli perheineen Espanjassa ja tapasi siellä Sebastianin, jonka kanssa Cecilie vietti iloisia hetkiä ja koki tunteita, joita ei ollut aikaisemmin kokenut.

Eräänä yönä Cecilien huoneeseen ilmestyy salaperäinen hahmo. Se on pukeutunut kauttaaltaan valkoiseen, ja sen olemuksesta huokuu, ettei se ole tästä maailmasta. Hahmo on enkeli Ariel, joka on ollut olemassa jo ikuisuuden. Cecilien ja Arielin välille kehittyy luottamus, ja he alkavat käydä öisiä keskusteluja ihmisten ja enkelien maailmojen erilaisuuksista. Vastausta etsitään myös perimmäiseen kysymykseen: mikä meidän tarkoituksemme tässä elämässä on ja mitä sen jälkeen tapahtuu?

Enkelimysteerio perustuu Jostein Gaarderin samannimiseen kirjaan. Elokuvan ohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja, tanskalainen Jesper W. Nielsen on aikaisemmin ohjannut elokuvat Den sidste viking (1997), Forbudt for børn (1998), Okay (2002) and Store planer (2005). Televisioon hän on kirjoittanut sarjan Sommer ja kirjoittanut ja ohjannut elokuvan Manden bag døren (2003). Tänä vuonna Enkelimysteerio voitti Norjassa Amanda-palkinnon vuoden parhaana lasten- ja nuortenelokuvana.

This year Cecilie is not able to take part in the family's Christmas preparations because she is seriously ill. Cecilie spends endless hours in bed, and in her thoughts she travels over and over again back to the previous summer. That was when she and her family were in Spain, and there she met Sebastian. With him she had many happy moments and felt feelings she had never felt before.

One night a mysterious creature appears in Cecilie's room. It is completely dressed in white, and one can sense that it's not from this world. The creature is the angel Ariel, who has already existed for eternity. Trust evolves between Cecilie and Ariel, and at nights they began to discuss the differences between the worlds of humans and angels. They also search for an answer to the most fundamental question of all: What is our purpose in this life, and what happens after that?

Through a glass, darkly is based on Jostein Gaarder's book of the same name. The film's director and scriptwriter, Danish Jesper W. Nielsen has previously directed such films as The last viking (1997), Little big sister (1998), Okay (2002) and Plans (2005). For television he has written the series Sommer, and written and directed The bouncer (2003). This year, Through a Glass, Darkly won the Amanda Award for Best Children's and Youth Film in Norway.
