Bille tells the hopeful story of a school-aged girl with an extraordinary imagination, whose family lives in poverty and who doesn’t have many friends to play with. Trying to comprehend the contradictions of reality, Bille fantasizes about Dreamland where buildings are made of chocolate, candy is flying through the air, and where all families get delicious soup every day. Deprived of her parents’ love and affection, Bille tries to prove herself and find a path away from poverty and the feeling of inferiority.

The book Bille by Vizma Belševica, one of the classics of Latvian literature, tells a story about being a young child in the late 1930s pre-war Latvia.
