The hometown of the 11-year-old Ben will be wiped off the map as an open-pit mine expands. Together with his family, Ben is forced to move to the nearby city of Düren and leave his old friends behind. At school, Ben notices that he is not the only newcomer as he stumbles across a boy named Tariq, but being friends is hard when the first thing that matters is the acceptance of others.

Both Ben and Tariq try to find their places in a new environment and a new football team but adjusting is harder than expected. Ben, who is forced to play defence, tries to prove that he is a worthy striker, but competition for positions and playing time is tough. Before long, the boys realise that they have more in common than they want to believe.

Too far away is a topical film about friendship which shows that when there’s a will, there’s also a way.
