An unashamed yet hopeful depiction of working-class Helsinki in the late 2010s.

Stupid young heart follows two 15-year-olds, Lenni and Kiira, in a working class neighbourhood in Eastern Helsinki. After the unexpected pregnancy of his new girlfiend Kiira, Lenni begins to look for support from his new acquaintance, Janne, a male in his 40s.

Lenni is desperate for acceptance but repeatedly drifts into bad company in his search for identity and a sense of belonging.

If growing up is playing a game, then Kiira and Lenni from Stupid young heart had picked a hard mode. The normal life of these two highschoolers was broken by an unexpected pregnancy. The rashness of youth, the blind confidence and fantasy, the nascent love led them to take this challenge, make promises to each other, and build a family. The distinction between these two characters was built at the very beginning of this film. Lenni is a scrawny teenager who always got bullied and taunted for his appearance. The girl Kiira, whom he had fancied for two years, is an attractive dance team captain. This difference became bigger during the pregnancy. Kiira started to take more responsibility for the new family. While Lenni got involved in local right-wing activity and turned his frustration into violence. Can they finally complete this game?

The narrative of this film is unflagging. Selma Vilhunen, the director, used the cold and unflinching eye of the camera to probe this increasingly disturbing and split society. On the one hand, many social issues are depicted, for instance, the resurgence of a radical right-wing party, the integration of immigrants, teenage pregnancy, the neglect of a single-parent family. The story highlights the social milieu, both internal and external, that will play a vital role in the development of a teenager. On the other hand, one film is too limited for all these topics.
