The Journey Is Long is the last part of Liisa Helminen’s trilogy of documentaries about children — the others being The Lads and Little Women. The film follows a group of kids for a year as they transition from kindergarten to school.

In the beginning, the kids ponder the future. After they receive their preschool diplomas, the film proceeds straight to the beginning of school, where the kids face new challenges.

In school, they must adapt to new rules. Learning becomes secondary for a while. At the end of the documentary, the kids visit their old kindergarten to tell the future first-graders what school is like.

The Journey Is Long captures various moments in the children’s school year while leaving their private lives unshown.

The atmosphere is intimate. Helminen avoids commenting and lets the children’s natural development serve as the film’s narrative arc. The film is warm and understanding in tone and truly emphasises the children’s experiences.
